21 MAY 2022, THE GLAD CAFE

(PAY WHAT YOU CAN/FREE)

A multi-arts event bringing together the asylum seeker and refugee community in a celebration of storytelling and community. Our programme involves a wealth of people sharing photography, music, poetry and more. There will also be delicious vegan food on offer!

The event features:

CAPTURING CONNECTIONS (Photovoice)

A series of photos taken by unaccompanied refugee minors in Edinburgh. The Mental Health Foundation in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council, NHS Lothian, Cyrenians and CAMHS delivered PhotoVoice workshops that focused on the themes of community, support, identity and connection. The young people learned how to use cameras, captioning techniques, the importance of consent when taking pictures as well as taking part in wellbeing activities.

This project was funded by the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

HIDDEN RHYTHMS (Music)

A collective of female poets, songwriters and playwrights. They come from all over the world but call Glasgow their home. Their work questions the themes of home, belonging, safety and finding silliness in difficult times

This Is What Hope Looks Like (FILM/PHOTOGRAPHY/STORIES)

When you are forced to live everything and everyone you know and often burdened with memories of trauma, you look for a glimmer of hope, something to lift you out of the darkness. This Is What Hope Looks like sees people from refugee communities share stories about what gave them hope when they first arrived in Scotland.

EYVE (MUSIC)

Eyve is a singer/rapper: "Music speaks to my soul, I’m all about that realness"

Maryhill Integration Network Presents: In Our Shoes (poetry)

Maryhill Integration Network (MIN), is a network bringing communities together through a variety of different projects, offering participants advocacy support, a chance to learn new skills, make social connections, share experiences and demonstrate the value of cultural diversity in Scotland’. Tackling themes such as motherhood, migration and even the art of navigating the Glasgow bus network, In Our Shoes contains a mixture of poems by individual writers and group poems. A performance of selected poems taken from the book by some of MIN’s community members will take place as part of the event.

Venue Location: The Glad Cafe, 1006A Pollokshaws Rd, Glasgow G41 2HG (this is an accessible venue)
